Wrestling:
What is a USAW card and why does my wrestler need one?
USA Wrestling is the organization Laveen Wrestling Club is chartered under. USAW cards provide insurance coverage for wrestlers participating in the sport. Additionally, most tournaments held in the Phoenix Metro area are USAW sanctioned tournaments. In order to compete at any of them a wrestler must hold a current USAW card.
How do I get a USAW card?
Visit www.teamusa.org, go to 'Athlete Membership'. Pay for the limited Folk Style card if your wrestler is only wrestling in the fall or the annual card fee if your wrestler will be participating year round. A copy of your wrestlers USAW card must be uploaded to the LWC's online account set up for your wrestler at the time of registration. Directions on how to upload the USAW card to your account are included the emailed registration receipt. You may also bring a hard copy to practice to turn in to your child's coach or text a picture of the card to 602-677-1980.
What gear does my child need in order to participate?
Every child must wear wrestling shoes to practice. No socks, bare feet or street shoes are allowed on the mats. LWC runs a used shoe program. Contact Veronica at [email protected] with your child's name and shoe size. If the club has the size needed Veronica will reserve a pair of shoes for your child. They can be picked up at the first practice and used until the child outgrows them or stops wrestling with the club.
If you child plans on competing he/she will need a singlet. Club singlets will be available to order the first week of practice. If you aren't sure your wrestler is going to compete and want to try a competition before purchasing a singlet the club does loan singlets to wrestlers depending on availability.
Headgear is not required wear at practice. Headgear is only required for some middle school tournaments and most high school tournaments. Younger wrestlers may wear head gear in practice if they desire.
Mouth guards are required for any child wearing braces.
Athletic shorts are recommended for practices. Please no shorts longer than knee length.
Why are your fees for wrestling so low?

Yes. LWC coaches expect every child to compete in at least one tournament a semester. For beginners, this may only be the Beginners Tournament hosted by LWC in October. Coaches encourage wrestlers to compete at least twice a semester, with the expectation being that the more advanced the wrestler, the more tournaments attended.
